"If you save one life, you're a hero. If you save hundreds of lives, you're a nurse," Dr. Frank Cheatham, senior vice president for academic affairs, told the Campbellsville University School of Nursing students at their recent associate degree nursing program pinning ceremony in Ransdell Chapel.

Makayla Ashten McCloud of Campbellsville, Ky., was pinned at Campbellsville University's nursing pinning ceremony.

Cheatham said he wasn't telling the students that their careers as nurses would be easy, but "it will be worth it."

"Nursing is a calling," he said. "We want to encourage you to be the best nurse you can be." He urged them to be "caring, compassionate models for Christ."

He also told them to find people who have supported them and thank them.

Dr. Bob Wade, dean of the School of Nursing, acknowledged several students with awards including: Award of Excellence to Shoopman; Clinical Award to Bryant; and Academics to Rainer, who also received an award for the highest on the national exam.

Rainer spoke to her fellow students and said it was an honor to have shared their journey together. "Praise the Lord. He is good," she said.

Scott talked about fellow student Phillip Baker who went to serve in Afghanistan and who will rejoin the class.

She quoted John 13:34-35: "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

She also told the students "A goal is a dream without a deadline" by an unknown author.

Dr. James Jones, pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and CU's church outreach special assistant, blessed the nurses' hands.

The philosophy and mission of the CU School of Nursing is: "It is the mission of the nursing program at Campbellsville University to motivate students to think critically through knowledge and experience. Our nursing students and graduates will uphold the dignity of all persons and respect diversity, lead and empower others through Christian service, and promote health through innovative holistic care."

The program offers an associate degree in nursing and an RN to BSN program.
