Students in the Carver School of Social Work were inducted into Phi Alpha Honor Society among the awards given at the Carver School pinning ceremony Dec. 15 at Campbellsville Baptist Church.

Savanna Wells of Greensburg, Ky., was hooded at the ceremony.

Phi Alpha Honor Society is the highest achievement a social worker can receive. Those accepted into the society were: Kela Capps of Burkesville, Ky.; Joseph Campbell of London, Ky.; Dana Conn of Mount Sterling, Ky.; Renee Cotter of Mount Airy, Md.; Ashley Hughes of Ashland, Ohio, and Nicholas Kaliin of Florence, Ky.

The Social Work Awards were given to Kayla Reece of Campbellsville, Ky., president of the Social Workers in Touch Can Help (SWITCH) Club on campus, and Brianna Shelby of Shepherdsville, Ky., president of the Louisville East Club, who also worked under Church Outreach and was recently hired under Renee Sartin, BSW LEC site director and assistant professor, as her main recruiter.

According to Dr. Helen Mudd, the dean of the Carver School of Social Work, the founding mothers of the school were in the graduating class of 1904 with the sponsorship of the Women's Missionary Training School that formed the first Carver school in Louisville, Ky.

From there, under the direction of Dr. William Owen Carver, the school grew, and in 1994 the Carver School of Social Work was brought to Campbellsville University. The university has had a social work program since 1974.

Mudd said 13 years ago when she first joined the School as a professor, there were only three faculty on staff, and now there are 13 faculty who love working with their total of 500 students now enrolled in the Carver School.
