Campbellsville University medical billing and coding class offered beginning May 4

Campbellsville, KY (04/20/2020) — Campbellsville University is offering a medical coding and billing class via distance learning beginning Monday, May 4 at 5:30 p.m. EDT.

The students will be invited to a Zoom orientation with the instructor at 5:30 p.m. EDT via their email.

Vouchers are available for eligible students.

The nine-month course is offered on the main Campbellsville University campus and at regional centers in Harrodsburg, Liberty, Louisville and Somerset.

Christie Minor, director of allied health for Campbellsville University, said, "Look around at who is an 'essential' worker right now during the coronavirus crisis.The healthcare field has always been a growing and promising field, but now the world knows it!"

She said according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth for medical coders is growing at more than double the average rate across all industries. Between 2014 and 2024, the number of medical coding jobs is expected to grow by 15 percent.

She said students can earn the certificate in nine months with 360 hours of instruction. Students will study the structure, format and definitations associated with all three systems and learn to apply and assign the correct International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes in accordance with the conventions and ICD-10 coding guidelines through the university's fully accredited program.

The said successful completion allows students to sit for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC®) exam through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or the insurance and coding specialist through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

Minor said medical coders spend their days reviewing medical records to assign codes and ensure that the health care providers they support are properly reimbursed for services. Physicians and hospitals depend on accurate coding making the role of the coder a valued one.
