Campbellsville University's Jr. Kids College scheduled June 21-24
Campbellsville, KY (06/21/2021) — Want something for your pre-school and first graders to do this summer?
Campbellsville University is offering Jr. Kids College that provides students, preschool through first grade, with opportunities to broaden the scope of their interests and interact with young people.
"We have been doing Kids College for over 20 years now," Daran Kennon, Campbellsville University's industrial education coordinator and Kids College director, said. "It is a popular program, and we get kids not just from this area but also Louisville, Bardstown, etc., as well as other places."
Students will be rotated through five classes: Tiny Tiger Archery, Craft Time, Cool Scientist, Kindle Fun and Reading Times. Classes will begin at 1 p.m. and finish at 3:45 p.m.
Tiny Tiger Archery is a safe way for junior students to have fun shooting a bow. Suction cup arrows are provided for the students to prevent any possible danger, but some students can work their way up to regular arrows.
Craft Time is taught by Ashley Glass, an elementary teacher in Nelson County and a student in Campbellsville University's Art Department. Students will do a different art project each day. "This helps the students develop creative and artistic talents," Kennon said.
Cool Science is taught by Amy Berry, environmental education and instructor in environmental science at Campbellsville University. She will teach students about outdoor sciences, helping them develop an interest in nature and science. Students will also be able to see turtles, tadpoles, salamanders and snakes during the Cool Science program.
Kindle Fun is another name for a photography class. Students will go out on the campus with the Kindles and take pictures. The pictures are then transferred to jump drives and printed.
Reading Times is guided by Gail Grisso, an avid volunteer at Taylor County Public Library. She will read select books to the students and help encourage them to enjoy reading.
"When we were not able to have it last year," Kennon said, "this year, kids were waiting for us to start taking registrations."
