Dick to host Senior Art Exhibit reception March 18

Campbellsville, KY (03/17/2022) — Shane Dick, a senior from Campbellsville, Ky., is hosting his Senior Art Exhibit at The Pence-Chowning Art Gallery, 205 University Drive, Campbellsville, Ky. The exhibit is open now through March 18. A reception for his art exhibit will be from 3 to 5 p.m., Friday, March 18, at the art gallery. Everyone is invited to both events.

Dick will graduate from Campbellsville University in May with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an Emphasis in Graphic Design.

In his artist statement, Dick said the field of art is one in which he didn't think he would be involved.

"Growing up, I only doodled in my notebooks while daydreaming during some of my classes," he said. "So, when I came to Campbellsville University and chose to be an art major, it was a huge challenge at first to get a grasp of the basics and improve when starting from the beginning."

In his four years at Campbellsville University, Dick said, "It's wild to look back at my work freshman year and being able to compare it to where I am now.

"Seeing how much improvement I've undergone drives me. It's something I look forward to four years from now when I'll be able to compare my work then to what I have now and seeing how much farther I've improved."

Dick said, as an artist, his job to be aware of everything in his environment and to problem solve. He said the world is filled with designs in every shape and form-from billboards, posters and album covers to consumer packaging, advertisements and even the clothes we wear.

"Each design fulfills their own purpose," Dick said. "Each of these designs is all tied together by the same elements and principles of design while also being presented in a variety of different forms. Whether it's designs made by other creators or designs in nature made by God Himself, each piece can inspire me and the art I make every day."

While graphic design is his primary focus, Dick said he never wants to stop exploring other mediums.

"Along with the urge to always improve and to push myself further each time as an artist and as a person, I also strongly value showing off different perspectives in my own artwork," he said, "whether it's a perspective from my client or a change to my own work due to another's critique."

Dick's art commissions over the years include an email header for Cheatham Center for Teaching and Learning, a logo for the Campbellsville University plumbing program, a welcome poster for the Office of Diversity, Community and Bridge to Success and a clothing line and jersey design for the Campbellsville University e-sports program.

His exhibitions include an art gala in 2019 and a watercolor exhibit at Homecoming in 2019 and 2021.

The gallery schedule this semester is as follows: Mondays and Wednesdays - 9 a.m.-noon, 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.-6 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays - 3:30 p.m.-6 p.m.; and Fridays - 9 a.m.-10 a.m. The art gallery will be closed April 11-18 for the Easter holiday.
