Lincoln Trail Behavioral Health System director of clinical studies holds stress busters workshop for Campbellsville University students
Campbellsville, KY (12/09/2020) — Journaling, not procrastinating, talking about feelings, enjoying hobbies and taking breaks were activities Kara Hawkins, director of clinical studies at Lincoln Trail Behavioral Health System, advised Campbellsville University students, as well as the public, in a "stress buster" Zoom workshop Dec. 3.
Hawkins spoke in conjunction with Erin Jarrett, Campbellsville University's director of counseling.
According to Hawkins, 11% of college students report sleeping well during school while 33% claim finals to be stressful, 45% experience more than average stress and 53% neglect their social lives.
Hawkins said there are a variety of things students can do to lessen their stress including getting seven to nine hours of sleep each night and keeping a balanced sleep schedule. She recommended eating healthy and encouraged students to get at least 20 minutes of exercise a day to help release endorphins.
She said when it comes to the "Don'ts," students need to avoid developing negative coping skills to relax and shouldn't rely on energy drinks and pills for energy throughout the day or while studying. They also should not spend hours upon hours studying but need to incorporate breaks.
Hawkins said people need to seek help when they begin experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety and/or can't get out of bed.
During quarantine during the coronavirus pandemic, Hawkins said it is important to keep a routine. She again recommended journaling, taking up a hobby or focusing on a previous one, finding a support group, reading and being sure to move around.
"The only person responsible for our happiness is us," Hawkins said.
