Scheyer named 2021 ACA Ledford Scholar
Campbellsville, KY (12/06/2021) — Matthew Scheyer, a Campbellsville University senior of Knifley, Ky., has been announced as a 2021 Appalachian College Association (ACA) Ledford Scholar.
Under the supervision of Dr. Indra Sahu, assistant professor of physics, Sheyer used this scholarship to help work in a group with several other CU students to conduct and present research on the transmembrane protein KCNE3.
"Matthew has shown a keen interest in studying the structural biology of membrane proteins," Sahu said. "His excellent research skill and his outstanding research proposal made him qualify for this scholarship."
The ACA Ledford Scholars Program offers financial assistance for undergraduate students' summer research projects. The program provides stipends for students at a rate of $10 an hour for up to 360 hours total.
"Matthew utilized molecular biology and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopic approaches to conduct outstanding research work on studying the structural dynamics of KCNE3 in different membrane environments, which is very important to understand the function of the KCNE3 protein," Sahu said.
Sheyer's video presentation of the research can be viewed on the ACA webpage at https://www.acaweb.org/ledford-presentation-matthew-scheyer/.
